The short version

Plumbing customers do not browse. They search, they call the first credible result, and they book. Your entire SEO job is to be that result and to pick up the phone.

Nobody reads a blog post before calling a plumber at 11pm. That makes plumbing SEO refreshingly simple: appear in the map pack for urgent local searches, look trustworthy at a glance, and respond immediately.

Emergency intent changes everything

Most local SEO advice assumes a research phase. Plumbing usually has none. Someone has water where water should not be, and the decision takes under two minutes.

That means three things matter far more than anything else: whether you show up on the map, whether your reviews look reassuring, and whether you answer. Everything else is a distant fourth.

Get your primary category exactly right

"Plumber" and "Drainage Service" and "Water Heater Repair" are different Google categories, and your primary one carries disproportionate weight. Pick the one that matches the work you actually want more of, then add the others as secondary.

Plenty of plumbing companies quietly cap their own ranking here without ever realising it.

Two-minute test: open an incognito window and search "emergency plumber" plus your town. If you are not in the top three on the map, you are invisible for the jobs with the highest urgency and the least price shopping.

Review velocity beats review count

A plumber with 60 reviews where the newest is from last week outranks one with 140 whose newest is eight months old. Google reads recency as a signal that you are still actively operating.

The fix is a system, not a push. A request after every job with a couple of polite reminders, running permanently. Our review guide has the exact cadence.

Build pages for the jobs you want

Separate pages for water heater replacement, drain cleaning, repiping, sump pumps, and emergency service. Each one is a different search with different intent and a very different ticket size.

If everything lives on one services page, Google has nothing specific to rank for any of it.

Then town pages

One genuine page per town or suburb you cover. Real detail about that area, not the same paragraph with the name swapped. This is slow, boring, and it keeps working for years.

The part that is not SEO but decides everything

You can win the map pack and still lose the job by not answering. Plumbing has the shortest patience window of any trade. If the call goes to voicemail, they are already dialling the next result.

Missed-call text back is not optional in this trade. It is the difference between ranking and earning.

What to do first

Fix your primary category today. Turn on automatic review requests this week. Add text-back next. Then start on service and town pages, and expect them to matter in three to six months.

Frequently asked questions

How long does plumber SEO take to work?

Google Business Profile and review improvements can show movement within weeks. Ranking service and town pages organically takes 3 to 6 months and then compounds.

What is the most important SEO factor for plumbers?

Your Google Business Profile primary category, followed by review recency. Emergency plumbing searches are won in the map pack, and the map pack weighs those two heavily.

Should plumbers pay for Google Ads or focus on SEO?

Both, at different times. Ads produce calls this week and are worth it for high-ticket emergency work. SEO costs more upfront in time and pays down your cost per lead over the following years.
